That’s the feeling Felix White got when he saw the Yankees star play over two games at Fenway Park last month.
“You can feel that he was above and beyond the human plane,” said White, a British musician, author and broadcaster.
This Saturday, White will get another closer look at the Triple Crown nominee when he serves as a commentator on BBC Sport’s broadcast of the latest season of the Red Sox-Yankees competition from Yankee Stadium. Melanie Newman will take over play-by-play while she is joined by White and former Yankees Ramy CC Sabathia.
The broadcasts are part of a new five-year deal between the BBC and MLB that will see the BBC’s regular season matches each season. The broadcast will be designed to attract new and existing baseball fans in the UK. The MLB-produced game will be shown live on BBC iPlayer at 1pm ET, 6pm in the UK.
“I think if people really liked baseball from England, [Newman and Sabathia] You’ll be able to deliver that, and it’ll feel like a really high-quality broadcast,” White said. The thing that I really hope to present is how I feel, on an instinctive level, and then trying to communicate questions that someone watching for the first time might have.”
White first fell in love with baseball in 2015 when he went on to race the Mets to the World Championship. His experiences at Fenway on August 13 and 14 were captured as part of the just-released short film, “Major League Calling.” By the end of his two-day introduction to baseball’s most famous game, White was full of emotion.
He said, “You really have this magical feeling that just music and sports give you a place where you can feel that everyone out there feels like, ‘We’re just where we want to be right now, in this space, in this moment.’” There’s a real relief to that against Kind of like the modern world.”
That weekend of Boston White helped prepare for his role as a commentator on baseball television. It’s a brand new project for White, but one that she’s ready to and excited about.
He said, “I hope I really enjoy it. I have the rare privilege of sitting next to CC Sabathia and asking him anything I want. We’ll see where we get.”
In 2019, BBC Sport partnered with Major League Baseball to broadcast the MLB London series between the Red Sox and the Yankees. As part of the new deal, BBC will broadcast the London 2023 series between Cardinals and Cubs in June as well as the future London series in 2024 and 2026.
