DJ VanderLey, who works as a race engineer in the #98 Ford Mustang at Stewart-Haas Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, was injured in a serious accident while competing in a dirt event at Lil’ Texas Motor Speedway on Thursday.

On Friday, DJ’s wife, Jordan, posted an update about his condition on her Facebook page.

The update reads like this: “Darren [DJ] VanderLey was involved in a horrific accident during a race at Texas Motor Speedway. He was flown to a hospital in Fort Worth, where he is currently still undergoing surgery. He has multiple broken vertebrae and a spinal cord injury. We won’t know the extent of the damage until later.

“He underwent surgery in the last seven hours, and I pray to God to guide my surgeon’s hands. We ask you to raise our family in prayer for a miracle at this difficult time. We have been blessed by our family who are racing, who move mountains to support us.”

Since Thursday’s incident, a GoFundMe page has been set up – by Austin Quick – in hopes of raising funds to help the VanderLey family with costs that will be incurred during the DJ’s recovery.

Richard Boswell – Team Leader Stewart Haas Racing Team #98 – Share the GoFundMe page on Twitteralong with a sincere message that says:

“DJ is the engineer on Team 98 and he can use our help. He is an engineer, an incredible racer, and works on his tail. If you have the ability to help in any way please do so. Please pray hard for the DJ, his wife Jordan and the rest of his family.”

Likewise, Cole Custer, Chase Briscoe, and Riley Herbst, three drivers who worked with VanderLey on Stewart-Haas Racing’s NASCAR Xfinity Series, shared their GoFundMe page, as well as their own message, showing support for a fellow teammate.

“Sending thoughts and prayers to DJ VanderLey and his family,” Custer said in a tweet. “DJ I got into a bad wreck last night at a race in Texas. A great guy and friend who helped me a lot at the Xfinity races [at Stewart-Haas Racing]. GoFundMe is starting to help him recover, all donations are welcome.”

Any additional updates – whether it’s via a GoFundMe page or VanderLey’s family or friends – will be added to this story, as they come in, if received.
