CLEVELAND, Ohio – Kareem Hunt took home the win and his old friend’s island as the Browns topped the Steelers Thursday night, 29-17.
Hunt is back with Steelers quarterback Mitchell Trubesky. They both starred at Willoughby South and Mentor, respectively from 2009-12, and graduated in 2013. The duo led the cleveland.com football team throughout the decade in 2020.
After the Cleveland win, Hunt switched shirts on the field, and Hunt reviewed Trubisky’s shirts in his locker as he met with reporters after the game.
“We’re going back,” Hunt said. Like elementary school, pee football, middle school, high school basketball.
“I always wish the best for him. He is a great player – Mitch – and a good friend of mine too, even though we went to different schools.”

Hunt finished Thursday night 61 yards from the line of scrimmage, and had 12 carry and three catches on four goals. Trubisky completed 20 of 32 passes (62.5%) for 207 yards. He lunged twice for 7 yards and a point in the second quarter.
Trubisky was taken by the Chicago Bears as second overall in the 2017 NFL Draft after a championship in North Carolina in college. At Mentor, he was awarded the Mr.
Hunt was an All-Ohio first-team pick twice as junior and senior at Willoughby South. In 2012 as a senior, he rushed for 2,508 yards on just 227 buggies (11 yard average) and 42 touchdowns. He was an underrated recruit but was drafted by Kansas City in 2017 after excelling at Toledo.
Previously, Hunt told cleveland.com stories about the seven-on-seven competitions he would play while in high school, against Trubisky and fellow Browns and Nordonia graduate Denzel Ward. Hunt joked that Willoughby South never lost those competitions and he confirmed that on Thursday as well.
“No, we didn’t lose,” he said. “I played Denzel in Seven vs Seven and played him (Trubesky). Willoughby South was always up front. … I always have to make sure he knows that.”
Hunt has earned a reputation as one of the toughest runners in the game over the past five years, but even so, he seems to run with a little extra flair the more he plays with the Steelers.
Being from the region, it is clear how much he appreciates the history between these two teams.
“Growing up, the Steelers had our number every time we played,” Hunt said. “And so the tables have turned. We are trying to make sure that we continue to collect the winnings against these guys and everyone else in this department.”
