Hyland regains title, CM runner-up in the Valley

A fifth-class tie breaker cost the Highland Bulldogs the Boys’ Golf Championship at the Mississippi Valley Conference in 2021.

Three points in the top four enabled the Bulldog to reclaim the Valley’s crown Wednesday at Belk Park Golf Course in Wood River.

Hyland shot 322 to finish 12 strokes against both Civic Memorial and defending champion Maskuta to win the MVC title for the fourth time in six years. He faced CM Mascoutah in 334 and finished second in the tiebreak. Trinity (338), 2018 champions Waterloo (343) and Jersey (406) have completed a six-team field.

Mascotta’s Jacob Florke and Highland’s Dominic Emig both shoot three over 75, with Flork getting his first playoff hole to win the valley title. Easton Belford of Highland came in 79th to finish third, with only three golfers breaking the 80 in Belk.

CM’s Zach Fitzgerald joined Highland’s Braden Scroove and Triad’s Owen Twiman at the age of 82 in a three-way tie for fourth. CM’s Conor Wells hit 83 to finish seventh in the four-way tie, with Mane Silva’s 85 giving the Eagles’ four golfers a 13th place finish.

Jersey led by Ethan Gelander 92, Bradley Deist 99, Adam Kaufman 106 and Logan Hoyt 109 also scored for the Panthers.

Cahokia Conference Championship – Salem shot 318 to defeat a 15-team field at the Cahokia Conference Tourney at Governors Run in Carlisle. Columbia finished second at 332, with Stillville (335), Ochauville (341) and Friborg (346) capping the top five. East Alton-Wood River finished 14th at 410.

Salem went 1-2, with medalist Matt Slover 3-over-75 and Jairen Stroud second at 77. EA-WR was led by Lucas Moore’s 90 and tied for 30, with Timothy Melton at 93. Roxana, who did not enter the field for a full team Led by Nick Cotter 99.

Marquette wins the triangle – Aidan O’Keefe 1 went under 35 to lead Marquette Catholic to double victories over Father McGivney and Waterloo Gibault at Spencer T. Olin in Alton. Explorers shot 160, with Griffins at 176 and Hawks at 184.

Marquette scored three of his four bests, with Mike Wilson at 39, and Will Schwartz at 41. Trey Fabe’s shot from Gibolt 40. The Explorers added 45 seconds from Carson Jones, Shawn Williams and Matthew Kane. McGivney scored 43 from Riley Nobiloch, 44 seconds from Bradley Goodwin and Drew Valhard, and 45 from Drew Kleinheider.
