Story – Risk vs. Reward in Texas: Compared to the previous generation of NASCAR Cup Series cars, the payload on this next generation has shifted toward the rear end. Combining the camber and shock settings, along with running the proper air pressure is vital to the life of the tires. Running under the Goodyear-recommended pressure causes the tire sidewall to deflect excessively, causing damage early in the run that can lead to air loss later in running. By testing and evaluating early-season racing performance, Goodyear has updated its tire build midway through the season, with a new tire prepared for Texas Motor Speedway versus what ran at the All-Star weekend at the track in May. . However, the focus will be on the rear tires once again, as the teams look to gain traction and speed in race #1 of the round of 12 qualifying.

“It has been widely documented that the balance of the next-generation car has shifted backwards,” said Greg Staker, Goodyear Racing Director. β€œOn a weekly basis, improving tire performance is a key component to having a successful weekend. Air pressure, suspension geometry and shock settings work in unison to get the most out of your tire combination. Being aggressive in any of these areas is definitely a recipe for speed on the run. The short, but risk-versus-reward of these choices can come back and infuriate you.We work closely with teams throughout the week and on the track, providing as much data as possible to help them make the right tire choices. We understand that teams are in a constant search for speed, But finding the edge of that circumstance is the key to ending the races.”

Notes – Trophy teams in KS-2 tire mode in Texas: After moving to an 18-inch bead-diameter tire for 2022, NASCAR Cup teams will be running a different set of tires than those in the Xfinity Series in Texas this weekend. . . This is a different mix of left and right side tires from the Cup teams that ran the All-Star Race in Texas in May. . . Compared to that All-Star, there are build updates to both the left and right tires. . . The Cup teams ran these same tires in Kansas two weeks ago, and they will be running them again in Las Vegas next month. . . This right frame icon first appeared on Pocono in July. . . With this 18-inch tire, lower sidewall, NASCAR Cup cars will not run the inner bushings on any of their tires in 2022.
