Women’s soccer hosts a youth clinic in Brownsville

Rio Grande Valley The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women’s soccer team trained 40 girls, ages 9 to 18, during a free youth clinic at Brownsville Sports Park on Saturday.

“It’s great. When I interviewed for this job, our management talked about the whole valley being our community. This is my first time in Brownsville, and I’m so impressed and excited to see so many young ladies here,” first-year head coach Mark Foster He said. “I’ve enjoyed talking to some of the parents and even some of the local coaches, so it’s great. We feel so supported.”

Participants were divided into three groups by age and took turns taking six stations, working for 12 minutes on each one. They received tips and advice from Vaqueros players at the skill stations where they worked on dribbling and passing. They had the opportunity to try and score goals on Vaqueros on the firing station and did other competitive drills like 1v1 and 2v2 and they also had a live game station.

“I always want it to be fun,” Foster said. “When we’re off the court today, I want every girl to say she had fun.”

After camp, Vackeros spent time signing autographs, taking photos, and talking with the participants. Foster hoped the young girls would find people to look forward to in his players, and he was proud to see Vackeros serve the community.

“Sometimes we can get caught up in seeing them just as players, so it was nice to see our girls having so much fun and seeing them send in,” Foster said. “We try to assure the players that being a freshman Athletic comes in Division I with responsibility and that these young girls look up to them. We have a lot of girls on the team from the Valley and a couple of this so I hope they see that and think, ‘This could be me someday.’”
