Are the Atlanta Hawks close enough to the title contender that Draymond Green will put them on top? Is the Golden State Warriors striker still able to lift his squad in this way? These questions may deserve more attention than one might imagine given that the Warriors are knocked out of the tournament.
It was the organization’s fourth in the past eight years and Green was critical to their success in each of them.
Green was suspended in Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals. LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers became the first to overcome a 3-1 deficit in Finals history by winning their first organization championship.
However, Green, despite its value, can be available at the right price.
Draymond Green will bring toughness, intelligence and defense to the Atlanta Hawks
The Hawks have gone big this off season as they exchanged three first-round picks and agree to swap to pick Dejounte Murray. There are some questions in their new double backspace. But the consensus seems to be that Murray is the perfect compliment to Tra Young. That doesn’t mean many are bringing the Hawks back to the Eastern Conference Finals.
NBA.com has released their off-season strength rankings which, to be clear, is not the same as a ranking.
But they did ranked the Hawks eighth on their list.
This is a bit surprising given that opinions on the deal ranged from the “summer move” at the high end to the “embarrassing offensive match” between Murray and Young on the lower side of the spectrum.
Murray checks the same boxes and is six years younger than the most accomplished green.
Even those ratings in strength recognized the need for more than one player.
Ernesto Cova of BolaVIP suggested that the Hawks be one of the interested teams if the financial row between the Green Warriors worsens.
“Adding Green would give them another elite defender alongside Dejounte Murray, albeit to the detriment of attacking. But the Falcons were in the market for a versatile defender who could put the ball on the ground, and Greene is checking all of those boxes.”
Cova admits that John Collins is better suited to the Hawks’ current front yard options for Clint Capela and Onyeka Okongwu. But he’s not the only one to suggest that a Collins-for-Green swap would be a good idea.
Heavy’s Jack Simone made a similar bid with the Hawks offering the Collins and a first-round pick which should either be the first 2024 lottery-protected spinner they take back to trade Kevin Huerter for the Sacramento Kings or theirs in 2029, next year they’ll have control of their pick.
Get the warriors

This discrepancy in draft picks will likely result in a deal being canceled if the player’s actual values aren’t. But there is no doubt that Green will bring a different dynamic to the Falcons.
Scott Rafferty of Sporting News wrote: “From Green’s defense through Golden State to the 2022 title tells you everything you need to know about what makes him special, he’s gone from guard Nikola Jokic in the first round to Garen Jackson Jr. in the second round of Galen Bronson in the conference finals. To Jaylene Brown and Robert Williams third in the Finals… If that wasn’t enough, the players shot 16.6 percentage points worse than anticipated in the 2022 NBA Playoffs when Green was protecting the edge.”
It remains to be seen if they need it. But the 10-year-old veteran proved he had all the intangibles needed to help win the championship.
Its availability is also unclear. The short answer may be that it is not. But he has his sights set on a maximum contract and reports suggest that warriors tend not to be obligatory. This does not mean that they will move Green to relieve some of the financial pressure.
However, it is something that could lead to the four-time All-Star ordering a trade.
Collins has been in the trade rumors for the past two years. This is unlikely to change even after he collaborated with his new backcountry on “The CrawsOver”.
But he’s not flabby and the hawks know it. That was why their asking price for him was so high.
Although it is unlikely to be, it will greatly help the hawks.
