Oxford Football Club UK Adopts Bitcoin Payments (Report)

It is said that one of the oldest football clubs in the UK – Oxford City – will allow fans to buy match tickets and food and drink with bitcoin rather than fiat. The initiative will see the light of day after a multi-year partnership between the team and digital asset exchange CoinCorner.

Over the years, the football industry has interacted with the cryptocurrency world several times. Famous players such as Neymar, David Beckham, Andres Iniesta and Ronaldinho have shown their interest in the sector, while other clubs, such as Oxford City, have embraced cryptocurrencies as a means of settlement.

BTC could become the ‘new standard’ in English football

According to coverage by the BBC, the city of Oxford has joined cryptocurrency platform CoinCorner as the latest football team to accept the primary cryptocurrency as an alternative method for match-day payments as well as food and beverage purchases.

The move is expected to go live on Saturday when the club face the Eastbourne Borough at home – Court Place Farm. In fact, as part of the multi-year agreement with CoinCorner, the stadium will be renamed RAW Charging Stadium, while the company’s logo will be embroidered on the back of the players’ jerseys.

Oxford City Director of Football Justin Merritt has noted that embracing the latest innovations such as bitcoin is vital for the team to “operate as a self-sufficient club” and is reflected in its long-term strategies.

Merritt stated: “It is not necessary for people to interact with our new technology, but we believe that as time is paid by bitcoin it will become the new normal in English football.”

Also commenting on the move was Daniel Scott – CEO of CoinCorner, who believes other football teams will follow the path of cryptocurrency in Oxford:

“It is a pleasure to see the club become the first to embrace Bitcoin payment in the National League. We believe this move will set a trend across the non-league and football divisions as the digital currency establishes itself as the new normal for sports fans and event-goers across the kingdom. United”.

Football and coding

Many football icons have already jumped on the digital asset bandwagon in one form or another. For example, Brazilian striker Neymar has bought two non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from the popular Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC).

2005 Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldinho has teamed up with decentralized exchange P00LS to launch his own token, called RON. Prior to that, he collaborated with Graph Blockchain to organize events and NFT experiences for his fans.

Turning to the Oxford City move, it is worth noting that other clubs have already adopted cryptocurrency as a means of payment. Examples include the Brazilian São Paulo, the Mexican Tigers, and the Spanish RCD.
