Football Preview for Boys – Afton & Ritnor – August 5, 2022

In today’s Friday Fastbreak, we’re ending a dead week on the football field as we look at two teams in the Suburban Green Conference who will once again compete for the league championship this fall. Ritenour and Afton will look to continue their winning path in 2022 after successful seasons last year.

Michael Mayberry returns for his third year on the sidelines with the Huskies as he will turn to a strong squad of five starters to help replace the three top scorers from last season. Arron Rico will be counted on to speed up Huskie’s defense as he takes over goalkeeping duties this fall.

Afton will turn to first-year coach Brian Misplay to lead the Cougars after long-time coach John Beaver retired after last season. Mesplay will have nine returning players to push the Cougars this year with Jackson Wilpers up front on the offensive side and Drew Stevens back in goal.

  • Season predictions:“We would like to build on our relatively successful season last year,” Mayberry stated. “We have a lot of humiliation to replace as our top three scorers come out, but I think we have some players ready to go forward. Defensively, most of our players come back, so we know what to expect from them. We were one win away from a conference title, so Winning our conference this year seems like a reasonable goal. We have some strong opponents in our conference, and I expect all of our matches to be competitive. We hope to position ourselves well to tour the district and/or state championships.”

  • Season predictions: ““We want to build on the success of last season,” Misplay said. “We’re bringing back all but 4 of the players from last year’s squad so we’re hoping for another strong season. We have huge voids coming in the season. The first was the retirement of long-time coach John Beaver. We may have some learning curves early because of the new positions for some players and maybe the system New. The second obstacle will be replacing 48 goals from last season’s top scorer. The coaching staff believes that we will be able to score more through the commission this season. We want to play our best football at the end of the season and hope for a strong career after the season ends.”
